Arirang – Flute & Piano (E Minor)

Pedagogically suited for Intermediate students (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on coordinating independent dynamic levels between hands while maintaining steady metric propulsion. In sections with articulated bass staccatos against singing right-hand runs, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: use light, shallow pedaling to enhance acoustic warmth without muddling inner voices. Preparatory Exercise: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface.

With E Minor as the primary tonal anchor, the notation designates one sharp (F♯, with D♯ harmonic inflection). Phrase arches gravitate toward E, counterpointed by coloristic pivots into G Major and subdominant foundations in A Minor. Harmonically, the progression Em → Am → D → G → B7 culminates in a decisive dominant-to-tonic cadence, establishing definitive tonal repose. At the keyboard, E Minor provides a somber keyboard realm where navigating between D♯ and the tonic E requires attentive finger placement.
