Arirang – Flute & Piano (A Minor) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

The temporal design is written in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), establishing a steady common-time pulse providing natural rhythmic symmetry across four quarter-note subdivisions. The indicated tempo mark of ♩ = 97 BPM (*Andantino*) suggests an atmosphere that is moderately flowing with clear articulation. Interpretively, subdivide internally with relaxed forearm weight to prevent metric stiffness across bar lines.

This Intermediate publication (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Passages dominated by Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Technical Drill: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

With A Minor as the primary tonal anchor, the notation designates zero sharps and zero flats (with G♯ serving as raised harmonic seventh). Phrase arches gravitate toward A, counterpointed by coloristic pivots into C Major and subdominant foundations in D Minor. Harmonically, the progression Am → Dm → G → C → E7 culminates in a decisive dominant-to-tonic cadence, establishing definitive tonal repose. Under the fingers, A Minor features a classic keyboard canvas where the shift between natural minor and harmonic seventh requires careful thumb angle.
