Arirang – Flute & Piano (E-flat Major) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

Framed in E-flat Major, the score establishes E♭ through a key signature featuring three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭). Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (C Minor) alongside strong cadential support from B-flat Major. Harmonically, the progression Eb → Bb → Cm → Ab moves through balanced harmonic transitions (Cm, Ab) reinforcing the tonal root. Under the fingers, E-flat Major features a rich acoustic setting favored in classical literature for its heroic warmth and sonorous chord voicings.

Rhythmic momentum flows through a 4/4 metric framework (simple quadruple meter). Calibrated to ♩ = 107 BPM (*Tempo di marcia*), the piece moves with a spirited with crisp finger articulation pulse. As a practical study rule, subdivide internally with relaxed forearm weight to prevent metric stiffness across bar lines.

Graded at the Intermediate level (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)), the score fosters disciplined keyboard ergonomics. The primary technical hurdle involves managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. When negotiating Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges, ensure the singing melody stays dynamically elevated over the accompaniment. Acoustically, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Preparatory Exercise: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

Performance Applications: In performance programming, Arirang – Flute & Piano (E-flat Major) is well matched for formal piano masterclasses, recital auditions, and degree juries.

Transposition Guide: Beyond the primary engraving in E-flat Major, collaborative accompanists can adapt the key: lower voices (alto/bass) benefit from transposing into D-flat Major, while high voices gain projection in F Major. Ensembles may utilize B-flat Major for brass fingerings.
