Arirang – Flute & Piano (C-sharp Minor) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

Set within the harmonic domain of C-sharp Minor (four sharps (F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, alongside B♯ leading tone)), the score secures tonal focus on C♯. Expressive depth is enhanced through secondary pivots into E Major and dominant reinforcement via G-sharp Major. Harmonically, the progression C#m → F#m → B → E → G#7 cycles smoothly through harmonic steps (E, G#7) back toward the tonic. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers an intensely dramatic keyboard topography that naturally facilitates wide arpeggiated accompaniments.

This Intermediate publication (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Passages dominated by Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Practice Focus: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

Organized under a 4/4 time signature, the music exhibits a simple quadruple meter with 4 beats per measure. At ♩ = 117 BPM (Allegretto), the pacing unfolds in a manner described as moderately brisk, bright, and buoyant. A core performance guideline: channel energy through the middle beats toward subsequent downbeats to preserve continuous phrasing arcs.
