Graded at the Advanced level (advanced concert artist standard (ABRSM Diploma / ARCT syllabus)), the score fosters disciplined keyboard ergonomics. The primary technical hurdle involves mastering nuanced rubato, synchronizing rapid arpeggiated passage work, and maintaining tonal polish under speed. When negotiating broken classical triad figures and balanced inner dialogue, ensure the singing melody stays dynamically elevated over the accompaniment. Acoustically, employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Rehearsal Step: isolate the polyphonic layers by singing one voice aloud while playing remaining lines pianissimo.

In 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 72 BPM (*Andante*), yielding a flowing at a graceful walking pace tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.

The piece operates in A-flat Major, governed by a signature with four flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭). This tonal center positions A♭ as the primary acoustic anchor, while F Minor and the dominant E-flat Major supply contrasting tonal colors. Harmonically, the progression Ab → Eb → Fm → Db cycles smoothly through harmonic steps (Fm, Db) back toward the tonic. Keyboardists will find that A-flat Major creates a deep sonority that encourages relaxed arm weight transfer into the cushioned depth of the keyboard bed.
