Barcarolle in G Minor (Op. 65)

Framed in G Minor, the score establishes G through a key signature featuring two flats (B♭, E♭, with F♯ harmonic seventh). Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (B-flat Major) alongside strong cadential support from D Major. Harmonically, the progression Gm → Cm → F → Bb → D7 reaches complete architectural rest through an authentic cadential arrival on the home chord. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers a dramatic minor sonority requiring agile thumb crossings on rapid descending passage work.

This Intermediate publication (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Passages dominated by Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Rehearsal Step: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

Metric propulsion relies on 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), giving the piece an authoritative quadruple framework where downbeat accents anchor the overarching phrase architecture. Set to a metronome speed of ♩ = 84 BPM (*Tempo comodo*), the overall character feels composed with disciplined, graceful rhythm. Pianists should ensure that they listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.
