Before You

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Balancing flowing keyboard arpeggios that support emotional melodic peaks requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, execute full pedal clears at dynamic changes to highlight intimate moments. Practice Recommendation: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending. Score pointer: Use a singing tone in the right hand and connect melodic phrases with finger legato whenever possible. Keep the left hand broken chords soft and flowing, adding.

The temporal design is written in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), establishing a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The indicated tempo mark of ♩ = 78 BPM (*Andante*) suggests an atmosphere that is flowing at a graceful walking pace. Interpretively, channel energy through the middle beats toward subsequent downbeats to preserve continuous phrasing arcs.

Anchored in A-flat Major, this work utilizes a key signature of four flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭). The composer builds structural coherence around A♭, deploying the relative pole (F Minor) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through E-flat Major. Voice leading proceeds primarily through diatonic harmonic motion involving tonic, subdominant, and dominant degrees. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers a luxurious keyboard geometry that minimizes finger travel between inner harmonies and melodic leaps.
