Coffin Dance

Benchmarked against Intermediate syllabus standards (mid-tier conservatory syllabus (ABRSM Grade 5 standard)), the work develops refined tonal control. Key hurdles center on projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Supporting figures featuring cinematic rolling bass sweeps and sustained chord foundations need relaxed wrist cushioning. Pedal coordination: feather the pedal to sustain bass notes without drowning upper textures. Practice Tip: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.

Cast in B-flat Major (two flats (B♭, E♭)), the composition organizes its melodic arcs around B♭. Dynamic tension arises from modulatory motion toward the relative mode of G Minor, balanced by harmonic stabilization from E-flat Major. Harmonically, the progression B → flat → G → Am → F → Dm rests on a half-cadential dominant harmony that builds musical anticipation. At the keyboard, B-flat Major provides a rounded sonority offering ergonomic comfort for chordal blocks and cantabile accompaniment.
