Cor Jesu Hymn Arrangement for Piano Solo & SATB Choral Harmony

In 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 88 BPM (*Moderato*), yielding a balanced with steady metric poise tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.

Framed in F Major, the score establishes F through a key signature featuring one flat (B♭). Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (D Minor) alongside strong cadential support from C Major. Voice leading proceeds primarily through diatonic harmonic motion involving tonic, subdominant, and dominant degrees. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers an expansive keyboard color historically prized for tranquil, pastoral cantabile expressions.

This Intermediate publication (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Passages dominated by four-voice hymn textures demanding strict tenor and alto balance benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, change damper pedal precisely with text syllable and chord changes. Practice Recommendation: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending.
