Doraji – Flute & Piano (C-sharp Minor)

Tonal grounding is defined by C-sharp Minor, marked in the score by four sharps (F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, alongside B♯ leading tone). The music alternates stability on C♯ with expressive harmonic excursions toward E Major and its parallel relation, C-sharp Major. Harmonically, the progression C#m → F#m → B → E → G#7 weaves cohesive chordal shifts (E, G#7) supporting melodic variety before resolving. In terms of hand topography, C-sharp Minor yields an intensely dramatic keyboard topography that naturally facilitates wide arpeggiated accompaniments.

Pedagogically suited for Intermediate students (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. In sections with transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: use light, shallow pedaling to enhance acoustic warmth without muddling inner voices. Preparatory Exercise: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface.

The rhythmic foundation is anchored in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), yielding a well-proportioned metric pulse alternating primary and secondary stresses across the measure. Paced at ♩ = 107 BPM (Animato), the tempo projects a cheerful with buoyant rhythmic bounce musical mood. To refine rhythmic clarity, avoid pounding downbeats mechanically; keep the line buoyant through intermediate pulses.
