Easy Pieces, Op.99

Framed in C Major, the score establishes C through a key signature featuring zero sharps and zero flats. Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (A Minor) alongside strong cadential support from G Major. Voice leading proceeds primarily through diatonic harmonic motion involving tonic, subdominant, and dominant degrees. Under the fingers, C Major features an unadorned keyboard topography requiring precise thumb tucks without black-key tactile markers.

Pedagogically suited for Intermediate students (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on coordinating independent dynamic levels between hands while maintaining steady metric propulsion. In sections with stately harmonic pillars supporting congregational singing lines, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: change damper pedal precisely with text syllable and chord changes. Technical Drill: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending. Score pointer: Perform with reverent phrasing, emphasizing the chorale text articulation. Maintain steady metric pacing suitable for worship accompaniment.

Operating within 4/4, this simple quadruple meter generates a well-proportioned metric pulse alternating primary and secondary stresses across the measure. The benchmark tempo of ♩ = 80 BPM (Moderato cantabile) conveys a poised with natural rhythmic breathing sensibility. During execution, subdivide internally with relaxed forearm weight to prevent metric stiffness across bar lines.
