Intermezzo in C Minor (G. 376)

Positioned within the Advanced repertoire (advanced concert artist standard (ABRSM Diploma / ARCT syllabus)), this work offers valuable training in balance and tone. Performers must concentrate on mastering nuanced rubato, synchronizing rapid arpeggiated passage work, and maintaining tonal polish under speed. Navigating broken classical triad figures and balanced inner dialogue asks for deliberate finger weight distribution. To preserve clarity, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Preparatory Exercise: rehearse octave leaps with feather-light thumb releases, ensuring the arm propels the leap from the elbow.

Framed in C Minor, the score establishes C through a key signature featuring three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, with B♮ raised leading tone). Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (E-flat Major) alongside strong cadential support from G Major. Harmonically, the progression Cm → Fm → Bb → Eb → G7 achieves harmonic stability via a classic authentic closure into the final tonic. Under the fingers, C Minor features a brooding, powerful minor space that rewards strong fourth and fifth finger voicing in the melody.
