Jasmine Flower (Mo Li Hua) – Flute & Piano (F Major) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

Anchored in F Major, this work utilizes a key signature of one flat (B♭). The composer builds structural coherence around F, deploying the relative pole (D Minor) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through C Major. Harmonically, the progression F → C → Dm → Bb cycles smoothly through harmonic steps (Dm, Bb) back toward the tonic. Under the fingers, F Major features a warm, resonant setting where navigating the single flat requires thoughtful thumb management.

Benchmarked against Intermediate syllabus standards (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), the work develops refined tonal control. Key hurdles center on projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Supporting figures featuring transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion need relaxed wrist cushioning. Pedal coordination: employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Practice Tip: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface.

In 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by an authoritative quadruple framework where downbeat accents anchor the overarching phrase architecture. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 117 BPM (*Tempo di marcia*), yielding a spirited with crisp finger articulation tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.
