Jasmine Flower (Mo Li Hua) – Flute & Piano (A-flat Major) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

Graded at the Intermediate level (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), the score fosters disciplined keyboard ergonomics. The primary technical hurdle involves managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. When negotiating transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion, ensure the singing melody stays dynamically elevated over the accompaniment. Acoustically, employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Recommended Exercise: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface.

Organized under a 4/4 time signature, the music exhibits a simple quadruple meter with 4 beats per measure. At ♩ = 97 BPM (Moderato), the pacing unfolds in a manner described as balanced with steady metric poise. A core performance guideline: avoid pounding downbeats mechanically; keep the line buoyant through intermediate pulses.

Set within the harmonic domain of A-flat Major (four flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭)), the score secures tonal focus on A♭. Expressive depth is enhanced through secondary pivots into F Minor and dominant reinforcement via E-flat Major. Harmonically, the progression Ab → Eb → Fm → Db navigates expressive chord variations (Fm, Db) returning home cleanly. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers a velvety tonal world where four flat keys provide comfortable tactile perches for the longer fingers.
