Lyrics: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty

Size:
Praise to the Lord, the Almighty Hymn – Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation Lobe den Herren 440 NEH, Praxis pietatis melica 1668 Joachim Neander (1650–80), translated by Catherine Winkworth (1827–78) and Rupert Davies (1909–94) The service is sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey and the Choir of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, conducted by James O’Donnell, Organist and Master of the Choristers, Westminster Abbey. The Fanfare Trumpeters of the Band of the Welsh Guards are directed by Lieutenant Colonel Stephen Barnwell, Senior Director of Music, Household Division. The organ is played by Martin Ford, Assistant Organist. Lyrics Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation! O my soul, praise Him, for He is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, Now to His temple draw near; Sing now in glad adoration! Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, Who, as on wings of an eagle, uplifteth, sustaineth. Hast thou not seen How thy desires all have been Granted in what He ordaineth? Praise to the Lord, who hath fearfully, wondrously, made thee! Health hath vouchsafed and, when heedlessly falling, hath stayed thee. What need or grief Ever hath failed of relief? Wings of His mercy did shade thee. Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee, Who from the heavens the streams of His mercy doth send thee. Ponder anew What the Almighty can do, Who with His love doth befriend thee. Praise to the Lord! Oh, let all that is in me adore Him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before Him! Let the Amen Sound from His people again; Gladly for aye we adore Him.

Tonality, Relative Keys & Chord Architecture

Tier 1 🌸

Tonal grounding is defined by D Major, marked in the score by two sharps (F♯, C♯). The music alternates stability on D with expressive harmonic excursions toward B Minor and its parallel relation, D Minor. Harmonically, the progression C → G/B → Am → Em/G → F → C/E suspends tension over an active dominant chord awaiting tonal release. Under the fingers, D Major features an open, sonorous layout where F♯ and C♯ provide comfortable finger fulcrums for both hands.

Piano Pedagogy & Technical Execution

Tier 2 🌸

Benchmarked against Easy syllabus standards (elementary benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 2–3)), the work develops refined tonal control. Key hurdles center on executing clean thumb crossings beneath fingers two and three during scalar shifts. Supporting figures featuring four-part homophonic voicing and resonant bass octaves need relaxed wrist cushioning. Pedal coordination: sustain acoustic resonance across stanzas while clearing on cadence rests. Practice Tip: count subdivisions out loud during practice to stabilize tempo and prevent rushing. Score pointer: Focus on cantabile phrasing in the right-hand soprano line. Practice left-hand bass octaves independently with a metronome at 60 BPM before synchronizing inner .
