Leave Her Johnny – Flute & Piano (E-flat Major)

Cast in E-flat Major (three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭)), the composition organizes its melodic arcs around E♭. Dynamic tension arises from modulatory motion toward the relative mode of C Minor, balanced by harmonic stabilization from A-flat Major. Harmonically, the progression Eb → Bb → Cm → Ab navigates expressive chord variations (Cm, Ab) returning home cleanly. Physically, playing in this key offers a rich acoustic setting favored in classical literature for its heroic warmth and sonorous chord voicings.

During execution, subdivide internally with relaxed forearm weight to prevent metric stiffness across bar lines.

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Balancing transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Preparatory Exercise: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.
