Mazurka in C-sharp Minor (Op. 46) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

The rhythmic foundation is anchored in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), yielding an authoritative quadruple framework where downbeat accents anchor the overarching phrase architecture. Paced at ♩ = 68 BPM (Poco andante), the tempo projects a singing with gentle, steady momentum musical mood. To refine rhythmic clarity, channel energy through the middle beats toward subsequent downbeats to preserve continuous phrasing arcs.

Positioned within the Intermediate repertoire (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)), this work offers valuable training in balance and tone. Performers must concentrate on managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Navigating Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges asks for deliberate finger weight distribution. To preserve clarity, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Recommended Exercise: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface.

The foundational pitch center is C-sharp Minor (four sharps (F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, alongside B♯ leading tone)). Here, C♯ serves as the primary resting point, while modulations into E Major and dominant tensions in G-sharp Major shape the emotional contour. Harmonically, the progression C#m → F#m → B → E → G#7 weaves cohesive chordal shifts (E, G#7) supporting melodic variety before resolving. Pianistically, the key produces an intensely dramatic keyboard topography that naturally facilitates wide arpeggiated accompaniments.

1. Recital Staging: This selection integrates smoothly into formal piano masterclasses, recital auditions, and degree juries.

2. Key Customization: When adjusting the native tonality of C-sharp Minor, accompanists can shift down a step to B Minor for lower voice types or lift the melody into D-sharp Minor for tenors and sopranos. Woodwinds read comfortably using G-sharp Minor.

3. Licensing Status: The musical score belongs to the public domain, making it accessible for unrestricted performance and scholarly examination.
