Nocturne in A Minor (B. 96)

Metric propulsion relies on 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), giving the piece an authoritative quadruple framework where downbeat accents anchor the overarching phrase architecture. Set to a metronome speed of ♩ = 80 BPM (*Poco andante*), the overall character feels singing with gentle, steady momentum. Pianists should ensure that they channel energy through the middle beats toward subsequent downbeats to preserve continuous phrasing arcs.

The foundational pitch center is A Minor (zero sharps and zero flats (with G♯ serving as raised harmonic seventh)). Here, A serves as the primary resting point, while modulations into C Major and dominant tensions in E Major shape the emotional contour. Harmonically, the progression Am → Dm → G → C → E7 achieves harmonic stability via a classic authentic closure into the final tonic. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers an introspective natural minor texture that demands deliberate hand placement when introducing the sharp leading tone.

Nocturne in A Minor (B. 96), credited to Giuseppe Tartini, occupies an established chapter within the contemporary classical piano repertory. this 4-page transcription spans 64 measures, drawing from accurate modern sheet transcriptions. Targeted at Easy players (elementary benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 2–3)), this score presents rewarding interpretive and tactile hurdles. Attention should center on executing clean thumb crossings beneath fingers two and three during scalar shifts. Accompaniment passages containing Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges require subdued dynamics to spotlight the melody. Mechanically, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Recommended Exercise: shadow-play the accompanimental chords silently while sounding the melodic line out loud.

Pianists frequently schedule this piece for formal piano masterclasses, recital auditions, and degree juries. While engraved in A Minor, the work accommodates vocal adjustments readily: modulating down into G Minor eases strain for baritones, whereas moving upward to B Minor highlights brilliance in soprano or tenor solos.
