The piece operates in D Minor, governed by a signature with one flat (B♭, with C♯ harmonic leading tone). This tonal center positions D as the primary acoustic anchor, while F Major and the dominant A Major supply contrasting tonal colors. Harmonically, the progression Dm → G → C → F → E7 navigates expressive chord variations (F, E7) returning home cleanly. For the performer, this layout is characterized by a tragic, dignified key signature requiring careful hand shifts when raising the harmonic leading tone C♯.

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails projecting the cantabile soprano melody while suppressing inner accompaniment voices. Balancing flowing keyboard arpeggios that support emotional melodic peaks requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, refresh damper pedal depth synchronously with bass root changes. Technical Drill: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending.

Organized under a 3/4 time signature, the music exhibits a simple triple meter with 3 beats per measure. At ♩ = 83 BPM (Andante con moto), the pacing unfolds in a manner described as moving at a tranquil, forward-leaning pulse. A core performance guideline: let beats two and three float effortlessly above the grounded bass root.
