Romance in C Minor (B. 2)

Set within the harmonic domain of C Minor (three flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, with B♮ raised leading tone)), the score secures tonal focus on C. Expressive depth is enhanced through secondary pivots into E-flat Major and dominant reinforcement via G Major. Harmonically, the progression Cm → Fm → Bb → Eb → G7 concludes with an authentic resolution that firmly anchors the home pitch. Physically, playing in this key offers an intense heroic key signature that commands deep shoulder weight on dramatic downbeat chords.

Pedagogically suited for Advanced students (senior concert repertoire level (RCM Grade 10 to Licentiate)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on refining subtle dynamic voicing across dense chords, executing octave cascades, and preventing hand cramping. In sections with articulated bass staccatos against singing right-hand runs, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Practice Tip: rehearse octave leaps with feather-light thumb releases, ensuring the arm propels the leap from the elbow.

Cast in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), the score delivers a well-proportioned metric pulse alternating primary and secondary stresses across the measure. At ♩ = 76 BPM (*Moderato cantabile*), the musical progression remains poised with natural rhythmic breathing. Pedagogical directive: listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.
