Romance in E Minor (Wq. 101)

Cast in 3/4 (simple triple meter), the score delivers a balanced triple pulse that balances grounded downbeats against two buoyant lifting beats. At ♩ = 84 BPM (*Tempo comodo*), the musical progression remains composed with disciplined, graceful rhythm. Pedagogical directive: keep forearm weight loose on beat one while gracefully floating through beats two and three.

Positioned within the Intermediate repertoire (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this work offers valuable training in balance and tone. Performers must concentrate on managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Navigating articulated bass staccatos against singing right-hand runs asks for deliberate finger weight distribution. To preserve clarity, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Technical Drill: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

Anchored in E Minor, this work utilizes a key signature of one sharp (F♯, with D♯ harmonic inflection). The composer builds structural coherence around E, deploying the relative pole (G Major) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through B Major. Harmonically, the progression Em → Am → D → G → B7 concludes with an authentic resolution that firmly anchors the home pitch. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers an introspective minor landscape that asks for flexible wrist cushioning during expressive descents.

Pianists frequently schedule this piece for conservatory juries, competition recitals, and academic examinations. The default key of E Minor suits standard instrumental ranges. Vocalists seeking a lower tessitura can transpose down to D Minor, while high-register singers modulate up to F-sharp Minor. B♭ brass transpose to F-sharp Minor. The composition is certified in the worldwide public domain, available for unfettered study, transcription, and live recital.
