Sakura Sakura – Flute & Piano (B-flat Major)

Anchored in B-flat Major, this work utilizes a key signature of two flats (B♭, E♭). The composer builds structural coherence around B♭, deploying the relative pole (G Minor) to introduce tonal contrast before resolving through F Major. Harmonically, the progression Bb → F → Gm → Eb moves through balanced harmonic transitions (Gm, Eb) reinforcing the tonal root. Keyboardists will find that B-flat Major creates a noble tonal landscape that supports relaxed arm weight across its two flat accidentals.

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Balancing articulated bass staccatos against singing right-hand runs requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Recommended Exercise: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.

In 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), rhythmic continuity is shaped by a balanced metric groundwork providing grounded stability with primary weight on beat one and secondary stress on beat three. The reference performance speed is ♩ = 97 BPM (*Moderato*), yielding a balanced with steady metric poise tempo profile. From a phrasing standpoint, avoid pounding downbeats mechanically; keep the line buoyant through intermediate pulses.
