Scale Assignment

Cast in A Minor (zero sharps and zero flats (with G♯ serving as raised harmonic seventh)), the composition organizes its melodic arcs around A. Dynamic tension arises from modulatory motion toward the relative mode of C Major, balanced by harmonic stabilization from D Minor. Harmonically, the progression Am → Dm → G → C → F → E7 moves through balanced harmonic transitions (F, E7) reinforcing the tonal root. Keyboardists will find that A Minor creates a classic keyboard canvas where the shift between natural minor and harmonic seventh requires careful thumb angle.

This Intermediate publication (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Passages dominated by flowing keyboard arpeggios that support emotional melodic peaks benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, coordinate pedaling with chord changes to maintain acoustic warmth. Practice Recommendation: drill awkward chord shifts at 60% tempo, ensuring fingers assume target hand shapes before descending.

Cast in 6/8 (compound duple meter), the score delivers a rolling compound duple pulse that creates a swinging, wave-like physical sensation. At ♩ = 72 BPM (*Andante con moto*), the musical progression remains moving at a tranquil, forward-leaning pulse. Pedagogical directive: preserve the gentle circular sway by letting beats two and three within each group lift naturally.

Rooted in the contemporary pop piano repertory, Scale Assignment stands as a representative work by Nancy Cao. The publication presents 3 pages totaling 61 notation measures, cross-checked against standard contemporary studio engravings. Digital music repositories index this composition under ISWC `T-98C.797.E9-1`.

Performance Applications: In performance programming, Scale Assignment is well matched for community music performances and versatile studio accompaniment.

Transposition Guide: Beyond the primary engraving in A Minor, collaborative accompanists can adapt the key: lower voices (alto/bass) benefit from transposing into G Minor, while high voices gain projection in B Minor. Ensembles may utilize E Minor for brass fingerings.
