Scherzo in B Minor (G. 400) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

Framed in B Minor, the score establishes B through a key signature featuring two sharps (F♯, C♯, featuring A♯ leading tone). Harmonic variety is enriched through dialogue with the relative minor/major (D Major) alongside strong cadential support from F-sharp Major. Harmonically, the progression Bm → Em → A → D → F#7 moves through balanced harmonic transitions (D, F#7) reinforcing the tonal root. From a tactile perspective, navigating this key delivers a brooding, serious acoustic palette with sharp cadential contrasts between minor tonic and major dominant.

Rhythmic momentum flows through a 3/4 metric framework (simple triple meter). Calibrated to ♩ = 80 BPM (*Moderato cantabile*), the piece moves with a poised with natural rhythmic breathing pulse. As a practical study rule, shape the measure as a unified arc rather than counting three equal ticks.

Positioned within the Advanced repertoire (senior concert repertoire level (RCM Grade 10 to Licentiate)), this work offers valuable training in balance and tone. Performers must concentrate on balancing complex polyphonic textures, negotiating rapid register shifts, and sustaining virtuosic momentum. Navigating articulated bass staccatos against singing right-hand runs asks for deliberate finger weight distribution. To preserve clarity, lift the damper pedal cleanly on phrase boundaries to preserve classical transparency. Practice Recommendation: isolate the polyphonic layers by singing one voice aloud while playing remaining lines pianissimo.
