Piano Sonata in A-flat Major (K. 193) Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

The temporal design is written in 4/4 (simple quadruple meter), establishing a well-proportioned metric pulse alternating primary and secondary stresses across the measure. The indicated tempo mark of ♩ = 72 BPM (*Moderato cantabile*) suggests an atmosphere that is poised with natural rhythmic breathing. Interpretively, subdivide internally with relaxed forearm weight to prevent metric stiffness across bar lines.

Assigned an overall Advanced rating (conservatory diploma level (ABRSM/RCM Grade 8 or Associate)), the composition exercises manual independence. The central obstacle centers on balancing complex polyphonic textures, negotiating rapid register shifts, and sustaining virtuosic momentum. In performing Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges, keep finger knuckles rounded and poised. For acoustic hygiene, employ syncopated pedal changes immediately following each chordal shift to avoid acoustic blurs. Practice Focus: practice rapid runs in diverse rhythmic groupings (dotted-eighth and sixteenth pairs) to eliminate finger lag.

Piano Sonata in A-flat Major (K. 193) highlights Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's refined handling of musical materials in the first Viennese school of keyboard composition. The complete engraving encompasses 68 measures across 5 pages, verified against Viennese Urtext source prints. Bibliographic registers identify this title under ISWC `T-A0E.35A.D4-1` and catalog entry `mbid-a0e35ad4-pianistforum`. Cataloged under Köchel index K. 193,

The piece operates in A-flat Major, governed by a signature with four flats (B♭, E♭, A♭, D♭). This tonal center positions A♭ as the primary acoustic anchor, while F Minor and the dominant E-flat Major supply contrasting tonal colors. Harmonically, the progression Ab → Eb → Fm → Db cycles smoothly through harmonic steps (Fm, Db) back toward the tonic. Keyboardists will find that A-flat Major creates a deep sonority that encourages relaxed arm weight transfer into the cushioned depth of the keyboard bed.

1. Recital Staging: This selection integrates smoothly into formal piano masterclasses, recital auditions, and degree juries.

2. Key Customization: Beyond the primary engraving in A-flat Major, collaborative accompanists can adapt the key: lower voices (alto/bass) benefit from transposing into F-sharp Major, while high voices gain projection in B-flat Major. Ensembles may utilize E-flat Major for brass fingerings.
