Soran Bushi – Flute & Piano (B Minor)

Pedagogically suited for Intermediate students (intermediate benchmark (ABRSM/RCM Grade 4–6)), this piece develops essential touch control. Key challenges focus on managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. In sections with Alberti bass patterns and contrapuntal voice exchanges, maintain flexible forearm rotation to prevent stiffness. Pedaling requirement: coordinate pedal depressions immediately after finger strikes to keep harmonies articulate. Recommended Exercise: practice left-hand harmonic leaps with closed eyes to develop spatial keyboard instinct.

Cast in B Minor (two sharps (F♯, C♯, featuring A♯ leading tone)), the composition organizes its melodic arcs around B. Dynamic tension arises from modulatory motion toward the relative mode of D Major, balanced by harmonic stabilization from E Minor. Harmonically, the progression Bm → Em → A → D → F#7 weaves cohesive chordal shifts (D, F#7) supporting melodic variety before resolving. At the keyboard, B Minor provides a brooding, serious acoustic palette with sharp cadential contrasts between minor tonic and major dominant.
