Waltz in E major No. 2 Urtext Performance Practice Edition & Harmonic Study Guide

Designed for Intermediate level pianists (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this piece demands clean articulation and hand balance. The chief hurdle entails managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Balancing transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion requires distinct volume separation between parts. Furthermore, lift the damper pedal cleanly on phrase boundaries to preserve classical transparency. Preparatory Exercise: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.

Tonal grounding is defined by B-flat Major, marked in the score by two flats (B♭, E♭). The music alternates stability on B♭ with expressive harmonic excursions toward G Minor and its parallel relation, B-flat Minor. Harmonically, the progression B → flat → G → Am → F → Dm suspends tension over an active dominant chord awaiting tonal release. For the performer, this layout is characterized by a balanced key setting where B♭ and E♭ naturally frame the right-hand thumb on middle C and F.
