Waltz in C-sharp Minor (Op. 46)

Targeted at Intermediate players (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this score presents rewarding interpretive and tactile hurdles. Attention should center on achieving fluid finger legato without relying on the damper pedal to mask uneven key releases. Accompaniment passages containing transparent two-part polyphony and classical Alberti motion require subdued dynamics to spotlight the melody. Mechanically, lift the damper pedal cleanly on phrase boundaries to preserve classical transparency. Practice Tip: play the melody forte while ghost-tapping the accompaniment keys silently beneath the surface.

The score Waltz in C-sharp Minor (Op. 46), composed by Frédéric Chopin, reflects the stylistic idioms of the Romantic expressive piano literature. This edition contains 120 measures formatted across 8 pages, corroborated through autograph manuscripts and historical salon publications. Worldwide rights catalogs anchor this title under ISWC code `T-250.C1B.FF-1`. Bearing historical opus tag Op. 46,

Tonal grounding is defined by C-sharp Minor, marked in the score by four sharps (F♯, C♯, G♯, D♯, alongside B♯ leading tone). The music alternates stability on C♯ with expressive harmonic excursions toward E Major and its parallel relation, C-sharp Major. Harmonically, the progression C#m → F#m → B → E → G#7 weaves cohesive chordal shifts (E, G#7) supporting melodic variety before resolving. In terms of hand topography, C-sharp Minor yields an intensely dramatic keyboard topography that naturally facilitates wide arpeggiated accompaniments.

Rhythmic momentum flows through a 4/4 metric framework (simple quadruple meter). Calibrated to ♩ = 68 BPM (*Poco andante*), the piece moves with a singing with gentle, steady momentum pulse. As a practical study rule, channel energy through the middle beats toward subsequent downbeats to preserve continuous phrasing arcs.

Curatorial Repertoire Role: The work serves as a reliable selection for studio recitals, competitive festivals, and scholarly score readings.

Tessitura & Key Transposition: Beyond the primary engraving in C-sharp Minor, collaborative accompanists can adapt the key: lower voices (alto/bass) benefit from transposing into B Minor, while high voices gain projection in D-sharp Minor. Ensembles may utilize G-sharp Minor for brass fingerings.
