Ballade in A Major (G. 372)

The foundational pitch center is A Major (three sharps (F♯, C♯, G♯)). Here, A serves as the primary resting point, while modulations into F-sharp Minor and dominant tensions in E Major shape the emotional contour. Harmonically, the progression A → E → F#m → D navigates expressive chord variations (F#m, D) returning home cleanly. Pianistically, the key produces a sparkling tonal environment where the trio of sharps elevates hand position toward the black-key cluster.

Organized under a 4/4 time signature, the music exhibits a simple quadruple meter with 4 beats per measure. At ♩ = 96 BPM (Tempo comodo), the pacing unfolds in a manner described as composed with disciplined, graceful rhythm. A core performance guideline: listen for the overarching four-bar hypermeter to keep phrases singing rather than measure-bound.

This Intermediate publication (transitional keyboard syllabus (ABRSM Grade 4 to Trinity Grade 5)) serves as an instructive study in keyboard voicing. Pianists must address coordinating independent dynamic levels between hands while maintaining steady metric propulsion. Passages dominated by articulated bass staccatos against singing right-hand runs benefit from conscious dynamic shading. Regarding pedal usage, lift the damper pedal cleanly on phrase boundaries to preserve classical transparency. Practice Focus: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.

Pianists frequently schedule this piece for classical concert programming and conservatory performance audits. To accommodate diverse vocal registers, accompanists can transpose the A Major score: baritones rest easily in G Major, while lyric tenors and high soloists project effortlessly in B Major. This composition resides in the public domain worldwide, verified for open study, performance, and recording.
