Rag

Rag, credited to Woolfleen Juskirk, occupies an established chapter within the classic American syncopated keyboard tradition. this 3-page transcription spans 60 measures, drawing from historic sheet folios and early piano rolls. Rights records link the piece to ISWC `T-514.1CD.5C-1` and bibliographic identifier `mbid-5141cd5c-pianistforum`.

Tonal grounding is defined by C Major, marked in the score by zero sharps and zero flats. The music alternates stability on C with expressive harmonic excursions toward A Minor and its parallel relation, C Minor. Harmonically, the progression C → G → Am → F → Dm → G7 rests on a half-cadential dominant harmony that builds musical anticipation. Physically, playing in this key offers a white-key keyboard terrain where maintaining firm knuckle support prevents flat-finger fatigue.

Positioned within the Intermediate repertoire (intermediate study curriculum (RCM Level 5–6)), this work offers valuable training in balance and tone. Performers must concentrate on managing two-part hand coordination and synchronizing pedal changes with harmonic shifts. Navigating ragtime octave jumps and rhythmic off-beat comping asks for deliberate finger weight distribution. To preserve clarity, use dry pedaling to let syncopated rhythm accents speak with crisp percussive bite. Rehearsal Step: record your practice with emphasis on listening for crisp pedal releases on each harmonic pivot.

Rhythmic momentum flows through a 3/4 metric framework (simple triple meter). Calibrated to ♩ = 101 BPM (*Moderato*), the piece moves with a balanced with steady metric poise pulse. As a practical study rule, feel the larger one-in-a-bar gesture to keep phrases airborne rather than stomping on each quarter note.

Curatorial Repertoire Role: The work serves as a reliable selection for contemporary vocal accompaniment, student recitals, and studio recordings.

Tessitura & Key Transposition: The default key of C Major suits standard instrumental ranges. Vocalists seeking a lower tessitura can transpose down to B-flat Major, while high-register singers modulate up to D Major. B♭ brass transpose to D Major.
